Pityriasis rosea is a common, benign skin rash that usually starts with a single, larger pink or salmon-colored patch on the chest, abdomen, or back, called the "herald patch." This is followed by a widespread eruption of smaller, similar patches.

The exact cause is unknown, but it's thought to be related to a viral infection, possibly a type of human herpesvirus (HHV-6 or HHV-7). It is not considered contagious in the traditional sense, like the common cold.

The most common symptom is the herald patch, followed by smaller, oval-shaped patches that appear in a "Christmas tree" pattern on the back. Other symptoms may include mild itching, fatigue, headache, or sore throat.

Pityriasis rosea usually resolves on its own within 4 to 10 weeks, although it can sometimes last longer, up to a few months.

While a viral cause is suspected, pityriasis rosea is not considered highly contagious. It doesn't spread like the common cold or flu.

We can usually diagnose pityriasis rosea based on its characteristic appearance. Sometimes, a skin scraping or biopsy may be performed to rule out other conditions.

In most cases, treatment focuses on relieving symptoms. Common treatments include:

• Moisturizers and emollients to soothe dry skin.

• Topical corticosteroids or antihistamines to relieve itching.

• Oral antihistamines for more severe itching.

• Ultraviolet (UV) light therapy in severe cases.

Cool compresses, oatmeal baths, and loose-fitting cotton clothing can help soothe irritated skin. Avoiding hot showers or baths can also prevent further irritation.
